Pool Safety
As a pool owner, there are many things you can do to ensure that your pool is a safe place to enjoy and have fun. Here are some tips on how to keep your pool area safe for everyone:
- Remember the rule: “no swimming for half an hour after eating”.
Swimming directly after eating can cause cramps and endanger even the
best swimmer.
- Always keep an eye open while children are in the pool. Designate someone
as the pool supervisor (do not assume someone is watching).
- Teach your children to swim, enjoy, but respect the water.
- Don’t depend on floatation devices and water toys to keep your
child afloat.
- Keep a mobile telephone at hand so that if people call you can still
keep an eye on the children while they play. The phone is then also close
to call should you need it in case of emergencies.
- Teach your children good water safety habits. Post up the “Pool
Rules” by your swimming pool and make sure the children are following
them.
- Keep an eye on the number of occupants your pool can safely accommodate.
- Store all toys in a container nearby, and encourage your children to
return the toys to this container after use. This makes your environment
not only cleaner, but safer.
- If you can, use plastic cups and plates instead of glass and china around
the pool.
- Purchase rescue equipment and have it available for immediate use.
Learn basic rescue skills.
- Learn what to do in an emergency. Enroll in a first aid and CPR course.
- Ensure that you have a barrier to prevent children entering the pool
unsupervised. A fence with a lock is an effective method of keeping the
pool area safe.
- Pool safety fences are commonly used to prevent accidents. Make sure
the fence gate opens away from the swimming pool, and that the gate can
self-close and positively self-latch.
- You can also place a safety cover over the pool when you are away.
Pool safety covers ensure that nothing falls into the swimming pool when
not in use.
- Alarms can be set around your pool if you would like to have extra security.
- Do not use the pool if: water clarity is poor (water is misty), there
is lightening in the area, main drain grates are broken or missing, or
if the pool cover has not been completely removed from the surface of
the pool.
- Keep toys, tricycles and other items attractive to children away from the swimming pool when it's not in use.
