Painting
Painting your room is one of the quickest and cheapest ways to redecorate. A fresh coat of paint can refresh the look of a room, and make your home seem more attractive. However, like all other aspects of design, you have to consider the room as a whole in order to create the correct look. Points to acknowledge include:
Purpose:
The purpose of the room has en effect on the style you should adopt. Think
of the style in relation to the purpose of the room. For example, a kitchen
or bathroom will usually have a different style from the living room or
bedroom.
Size:
The size of the room can have an effect on the style you are trying to create,
and the colour scheme. Learn your dimensions of your room and try to realistically
envision the style in the room before you begin to make changes.
Architecture / Furnishings:
Remember to take into account any significant architecture. Also if you
have furnishings that you are going to keep, try to imagine where they would
go, and if they suit the new colour scheme.
Colours:
Colours can create a particular mood for your room. Colours are very personal,
making this an excellent way to create a really personal touch to your room.

Compare quotes from several painters:
In order to get the best idea of price, quality and the services you can
expect, the best thing is to request quotes from several painters in your
neighbourhood. They will fill you in on the best options to use when painting
your home.
Ask to see Portfolio:
Ask the painter you are interested in to provide you with a portfolio of
their work so that you can see their past efforts. Also, many companies
will happily provide recommendations from previous happy customers. This
can help to ensure you of their professionalism.
Are they a member of a trade association?
Many professional painters are members of trade associations. These associations
vet their members to ensure a standard level of professionalism. One of
the larger painting trade associations is the MPA “Master Painters
Australia” (www.mpa.org.au)
Talk to your Painter:
Make sure you communicate what you would like to your painter to
get your desired effect. If you have made a scrapbook of the different designs
you like, show this to your painter. Perhaps they will have some ideas of
paints and effects you can use that will help.
Take Cover:
On the day that you are painting, cover all your furnishings and floor with
drop sheets to prevent any spills ruining your things. Also remove all fragile
items to avoid any damage. It is best to remove as much as possible from
the room you wish to paint so that your painter can move freely around the
room.
Wall Preparation:
It is possible that your painter might want to strip old wallpaper or “prepare”
the wall before painting. This is important to ensure the paint covers correctly.
Paints:
It is best to use quality paints to ensure a good finish. 100% acrylic paints
allow more intense colouration and can cover better. Better quality paints
are also more resistant to staining, the higher glosses resist water.
Let your room Breathe:
After the room has been painted, make sure to open the windows to ventilate
your room. Failing to ventilate properly can lead to headaches and nausea.
If you do not have windows in a particular room, and are unsure how to ventilate
your room, you can ask your painter for advice.
Caution! Wet Paint:
If the room is used by all the family, be sure to advise them not to touch
any wet surfaces. The best option to ensure this would be to caution off
the room, and stop entry until the paint drys.
