Handy Interior Decorating and Design Tips
Research Design Trends:
Try to get inspiration for designing your home by looking at trends and
styles in magazines, design books, open days and showrooms.
Make a Scrapbook:
Cut out the best ideas you find in the different magazines and place them
together in a scrapbook to clearly see which ideas you can use and which
ideas can be adapted for you home. This will also help you to see if certain
ideas will go well together, or if they fall into the same theme or style
for your home.
Be Brave with Texture:
Don’t be afraid to look at the different textures and materials you
can use to add extra dimension and effect to the style you are trying to
create.
Look at the Big Picture:
Try to harmonize the room by keeping the balance of the different components
in mind. For instance, where a picture is hung can “counter-balance”
the effect of a stand up lamp in the corner of the room. Look at the room
as a whole, and how each element plays a part.
Try to match the style of your room its purpose:
Style is usually best when adapted to the right rooms, for instance, different
styles can look best in the living room, whilst others are more suited to
the kitchen or bathroom.
Do not overwhelm with colour:
Life is a veritable rainbow, however it is best to stick to accents with
the most powerful colours, as this creates a more satisfactory outcome than
a whole room painted in a powerful shade. Play with accenting rooms, and
use you imagination to add some extra touches of your own.
Get your dimensions correct:
Be sure to measure the room dimensions where you wish to decorate. This
will help you to plan how much decorating material you will need, whether
this is carpeting, wallpaper, paint or any construction that you might need.
Think of Quality:
While there are a lot of options out there, many of us feel inclined towards
the “quick fix” at the most economical price, however if you
want your look to last, it is sometimes best to invest in more quality products
that will have a longer life expectancy. You can find that you are actually
saving yourself money in the long-term.
Keep it Light:
How much natural light is there in your room? What lights do you have? The
lighting in your room, and how you play with that aspect is a big part in
deciding the style and character of the room you would like to create.
