Gardens & Children
Gardens can be a wonderful place for creativity and expression for children.
With space to play and limitless natural curiosities to explore, your garden
can be a healthy environment for your children to play in.
Follow the safety tips below to ensure that your garden is child friendly.
After you have checked your garden is safe, it can be a place where your
children can spend hours at play, and a place the family can enjoy.
Safety:
- Store all garden utensils in a shed with padlock to keep children out.
- All poisons and garden fertilizers should be stored in locked shed.
- Make sure all water features (such as swimming pool area) are fenced
to ensure it is a safe environment for your child to play.
- Fence your garden to provide privacy and security.
- If your garden is close to a road or public area a hedge, rockery or
fence can provide a border. Encourage your children to stay within the
garden borders for safety.
- Keep an eye out for stacked objects, or anything that may hurt your
children if they try to climb it.
- Make sure you do not have any sharp objects in your garden that are
accessible to your children.
- If you are spraying insecticide or poisons, be sure to net off this
area so that your children cannot access it. Warn them to stay away until
it is safe.
- Create an area of shade in the garden, so that your children do not get burnt by the sun. Giving shade to play areas is a good idea and one adopted by many public play areas.
Fun:
- Provide clear spaces for them to run and play.
- Encourage sports, make sure you have a football, bats, tennis rackets
or other sports objects for them to play with. Hula hoops, skipping ropes
and water pistols are also always good for them to play with.
- Store all outside toys in an easily accessible storage box outside in
your garden. Encourage your children to store their toys in this box when
they have finished playing to help keep your garden clean.
- For hot days, a paddling pool (small inflatable pool) is always fun.
- A tree-house can provide hours of fun for your children. Be sure to
make sure the house is secure and sturdy. If you want peace of mind, you
can always ask professionals to build this for you.
- If you do not have the grown trees to build a tree-house, but you have
the space, you can also think of a Wendy house for your children.
- Make a space in the garden for your children. This is their spot to
grow their own garden. Encourage them to grow a variety of flowers and
vegetables so that they can get the most of this learning experience.
- Provide paints and rocks, and have them paint rocks all different colours
to edge their garden patch. This gives immediate colour stimulus for them
for their garden, adds a personal touch and is fun to do.
- Have them collect a couple of insects in a jar (under your supervision)
so that they can get a close look at the insects and learn about them.
- Trampolines can be hours of fun, but you should be careful that they
do not hurt themselves falling off. A protective netting can be added
around the edge to make sure that accidents do not occur.
