Garden Types
There are numerous different types of garden, all serving particular functions:
- Vegetable Gardens: The cultivation of gardens and fruits;
this type of garden is one of the oldest varieties. Many people still
grow their own vegetables, and often a section of the garden is separated
for this purpose. Vegetable gardens are usually sectioned, with a section
for each vegetable or fruit. A good trick to recognize your vegetables
while they are growing and to help you control the plant care necessary,
is to stick a label in each section labeling the vegetable you are growing.
- Herb Gardens: Growing culinary herbs and spices ensures
that you get the freshest ingredients. You can grow a herb garden in as
small a spot as a window-box. Usually the different herbs are separated
through the planting design. The additional pleasure of the smell and
colour of these gardens makes them a popular choice.
- Physic Gardens: Another version of the herb garden;
this garden cultivates medicinal plants.
- Rose Gardens: The fragrance and colour of the rose
led to its popularity in Roman times. It was grown in medieval gardens
in Europe, and maintains popularity there to this day. This passion was
quickly adapted in Australia, with many societies specialized in the rose
garden.
- Knot Gardens: This type of garden has squares of flora
or paving encased by dwarf box-hedging. Inspired by the renaissance, the
knot garden looks to control nature into beautiful patterns. The name
“knot” derives from the carpet knots on which the designs
were based.
- Wild Gardens: This natural style encourages the growth
of natural plants and wild grasses. It can help to encourage wild birds
and animals into your garden.
- Oriental Gardens: This type of garden incorporates the use of water (Koi Carp ponds, waterfalls or streams) and paths, rocks and sculptured bushes and trees to create a peaceful and tranquil garden.
There are many other types of garden available. If you are using a professional landscaper or gardener, please ask them for the different styles and types of garden that they specialize in. Your garden can be adapted to any type that you choose, within the limits of the climate, material and means. You should consider the size, soil content and natural elements already in your garden, when deciding on the type of garden you are looking for. If you are uncertain of what you would like, you can always ask your landscaper or garden designer to show you a portfolio. A portfolio can give you a good visual impression of what options you have.
