Common Plumbing Problems

There are many reasons to hire a plumber. Here are some of the more common plumbing propblems that can occur around the home, along with the syptoms that you can recognise, and the reasons that they occur.

Toilet Plumbing Problems

1. Strange Sounds
   Syptoms: Abnormal sounds after flushing toilet
   Diagnosis: Damaged fill valve
2. Running Toilet
   Syptoms: Continuous flow of water
   Diagnosis: Broken flapper
3. Clogged Toilet
   Syptoms: Unable to flush. Water collects in bowl. Flooding can occur
   Diagnosis: Build up of waste in the pipes
4. Poor Flushing
   Syptoms: Toilet does not flush completely, or needs constant pressure on handle to flush.
   Diagnosis: Tank's float ball is either too high or too low
   

Shower Plumbing Problems

1. Shower Leaks
   Syptoms: Puddles of water around shower enclosure
   Diagnosis: Damaged shower part in need of repair or replacement
2. Temperature Fluctuations
   Syptoms: Water jumps from hot to cold in quick succession.
   Diagnosis: Several possibilities including broken temperature control in water heater, sediment build-up in water heater tank, extinguished pilot light in gas water heaters, or clogged or rusty water pipes
3. Clogged Showerhead
   Syptoms: Limited water flow, thin jets of water
   Diagnosis: Build up of minerals deposits

Bathtub / Sink Plumbing Problems

1. Clogged Sink
   Syptoms: Slow or no water drainage
   Diagnosis: Blocked or rusty pipes
2. Clogged Bathtub drain
   Syptoms: Slow or no water drainage
   Diagnosis: Blocked pipes (usually the accumulation of grease, soap scum and hair along the inside of the drainpipe)
3. Low water pressure
   Syptoms: Limited water flow, turning on taps can effect other plumbing in home.
   Diagnosis: Several possibilities including incorrect sink installation, broken or rotten water pipes, and damaged aerators.
4. Temperature Fluctuations
   Syptoms: Water jumps from hot to cold in quick succession.
   Diagnosis: Similar possibilities as with low water pressure: incorrect sink installation, broken or rotten water pipes, and damaged aerators.

Water Heater Plumbing Problems

1. Low / No Hot Water Supply
   Syptoms: Running out of hot water during showering / bathing
   Diagnosis: Sediment build-up in water tank, or defective dip tube
2. Leaks
   Syptoms: Water seeping from tank
   Diagnosis: Sediment build-up in water tank, or defective valve
3. Strange Noises
   Syptoms: Noises issuing from tank
   Diagnosis: Several possibilities, including sediment build-up in water tank, defective plumbing parts, high temperature setting, and improper installation of tank
   

Other Common Plumbing Problems

1. Burst Pipes
   Syptoms: Flooding or water leaks from pipes
   Diagnosis: Water in pipe freezes and expands to burst the pipe
2. Coloured Water
   Syptoms: Water has a clolour
   Diagnosis: Pipes are filled with sediment such as rust or dirt
3. Rattling Pipes
   Syptoms: Pipes vibrate and appear to rattle when they hit a solid surface like a wall
   Diagnosis: Securing loose pipes
4. Whistling Pipes
   Syptoms: Water whistles as it issues from tap
   Diagnosis: Sediment build-up in water tank, or defective valve
