Moving home can be stressful, so careful planning can help to make the whole process run as smoothly as possible. Here are some helpful tips and advice:

Tips for Requesting a Removal Quote:
Before you move, you have to select the removal company that you wish to use. It is important that you select a company you can trust, that provides the services you need at the correct price. The best way to achieve this is to compare quotes from several companies. It is good to prepare before you request a quote; this will save you time and effort later. Here are some tips to help in requesting a quote with the minimum fuss:

• Schedule a date for when you would like to move.
• Try to calculate how many m3 you would like to move.
• If you cannot calculate m3, compile an itinery of your furniture.
• Figure out if you require fragile packing, self packing or a full packing service.
• Request free quotes from several removalists, to compare services and prices.
• When requesting a quote, use m3 or itinery to inform them of the size of move.
• The more information you give the removalist, the more accurate the quote.
• If you live in an apartment, mention which floor.
• Also mention if there are difficulties for parking or access in your area.
• List any items that require fragile packing.
• Inform them if you require a full packing service.
• If you require packing materials beforehand, inform them of what you would like.
• Ask for a “breakdown” of quote, so that you can see listed services.
  

Tips for Comparing Quotes:
Once you have received responses from the removal companies you have contacted, the next step is to compare the services and decide on the removalist to use. Here are points to consider when comparing quotes:

• Look at breakdowns of quotes to see the services listed
• Check to compare services are similar; do you get more services from some companies than others?
• Can all companies schedule at a time that is appropriate to you?
• Compare prices of services listed.
• Do some research into the companies you are interested in.
  

Checking Removalists:
When you have a shortlist of the removal companies you are interested in, a small bit of research can give you a good impression of the company. Your removalist will be moving all your furniture, so it is important to choose a company that you can trust. Here are some points to check:

• Ask removalist for recommendations from previously satisfied customers.
• Ask if they are a member of a Trade Association (especially if you are moving internationally).
• Ask how many years they have been in business.
• Ask whether they offer insurance, and if so what types of insurance, and the list of rates.
  

Booking your Removal:
Once you have made your choice, contact the removal company and book. They will then provide you with the following information:

• The Dates and Times when they will arrive to pack and load your furniture.
• How long the loading proces will take (rough estimate)
• Details about move, including the date of arrival at new address.
• Any insurance documents you have arranged.
• An itinery of your furniture and household goods. This is good to keep and check when unpacking.
• Invoice.
• Details about payment options.

Prepatation before Moving:
Once you have booked your move, you should start to prepare as soon as possible, to avoid complications at the last minute. Here are some good tips for preparing for your move:

• Consider how many boxes you will need for each room.
• If you are self-packing your items, you will need packing material. Contact your removalist to see if you can buy packing material from them. If not, look online for retailers.
• If you are packing yourself, make sure that you are using “standard” sized boxes; boxes that are too large may not be allowed to be carried by removalists (due to weight issue).
• Do you have heavy items (such as books)? If so you may need to order heavy-duty boxes which can cope with heavier loads. These are usually slightly more expensive, however will avoid any complications (like boxes bursting if too heavy).
• Will you need bubble-wrap or wrapping paper? If so order it with the boxes.
• Wrapping-tape is also necessary to seal boxes once full. You can buy the tape and applicators from retailers.
• Remember to list the contents of the boxes in the side of the box. This will help you to find items later when unpacking.
• Mark which room the box belongs to (for instance, “Kitchen” or “1st Bedroom”). This saves time when unpacking, and can help you to inform the packers which room to move the boxes to at your new address.
• Start by packing your less essential items, and continue until only the basic essentials you are taking with you remain.
• When getting a washing-machine ready to pack, it is good to add a couple of old towels in the washing-machine drum, to absorb and leaks that may occur when it is being moved.
• Dismantle any large pieces of furniture, if it makes it easier to pack and move. However, with smaller items (like chairs) this is usually unnecessary.
• Remember to unscrew your lights if you wish to take them with you. Too many times it is the last thing that people think about – and results in them being left!
• Check your home for any other fixed items that you wish to take, these will probably have to be removed before the removal date.
• Clean kitchen items before packing them; make sure that grease is removed.
• Ensure that you have all your essentials together, by keeping all those items in the same space, you are less likely to pack them by mistake.
• In the last days before the removalists come to load your furniture, you may want to buy disposable cups and plates and cutlery; this allows you to pack your regular flatware beforehand.
• Always keep a pair of scissors and tape handy in case you need to open a box at the last minute.

Packing and Loading Furniture:

And then the big day arrives! The day that the packers come to pack and load your furniture, here are a couple of tips to ensure this day goes smoothly:

• Collect the items you wish to take with you personally (a suitcase of clothes, purse or wallet, passports, drivers’ licence and other items that you wish to make the journey with). Make sure that they are seperated from your other items, and inform the removalists that they are going with you. This should ensure that they are not packed by mistake.
• Clean surfaces before the removalists come, this helps to create an organised environment, and makes it easier for the removalist to see the items they should concentrate on.
• Remove parked cars from in-front of your house to make your house accessible for removalists.
• Inform removalists of any fragile packing you have arranged, and show them the items.
• Present them with an itinery of the items, or ask if they already have an itinery.
• Give them room to move your furniture, but stay at hand in case they have any questions.
• Offer some refreshment from time to time (it’s heavy work!).
• When they are fully loaded into the removal van and ready to go, check once again that you have the paperwork concerning the move, and the arrival date in the new address.
