While each carpentry task can differ, most carpenters follow the same basic steps when carrying out work:

  • Arranging Layout: deciding on materials, measuring and marking in preparation of the work.
  • Cutting: They cut and shape the wood to the arranged plans so that the fixture fits together perfectly. To do this they commonly use tools such as chisels, saws, drills, planes and sanders. In addition to wood, they may cut other materials like plastic, fibreglass or plasterboard.
